One Year of Bark'n'Byte: What We Learned Running Our Own Security System
We launched Bark'n'Byte in December 2023 as an experiment: could we build a property security system that's genuinely smarter than the commodity options — computer-vision detection, layered deterrents, local processing — and run it ourselves in Pasadena? A year in, here's where it stands.
What It Is
Bark'n'Byte is our in-house security stack: cameras and sensors feeding computer-vision detection that runs on local hardware, so video never leaves the property. Layered deterrents engage before an incident instead of documenting one after. It's opinionated by design — we built it the way we think security systems should work, not the way they're usually sold.
What a Year of Operation Taught Us
Running a security system is different from designing one. Real-world conditions — lighting, weather, wildlife, false-positive fatigue — reshaped our detection tuning more than any lab test could have. Every improvement we shipped this year came from something the system got wrong in production.
That operating experience is also why our security consulting is grounded: when we advise on detection systems, monitoring, and physical-digital integration, it's from running one, not from a slide deck.
Looking Forward
Year two is about refinement: better detection tuning, more deterrent options, and continuing to keep every byte of footage on-premises.
