Arc Academy Terminal: A Safe Place to Learn the Command Line

The command line is the most durable skill in computing, and one of the worst-taught. Documentation assumes you already know it. Tutorials have you type commands into a real shell, where one mistyped rm has consequences. Most people bounce off — not because the skill is hard, but because the learning environment is hostile.

Arc Academy Terminal is our answer: an open-source terminal application that teaches Linux by letting you actually use it, safely.

How It Works

A simulated system, not your system. Arc Academy runs a full simulated directory structure inside the app. You navigate, create, move, and delete like on a real machine — and none of it touches your actual files. Make the classic mistakes here, where they cost nothing. Sessions reset clean.

An explanation for every command. Connect the AI provider of your choice — OpenAI, Anthropic, or a local model — and every command you run comes back with context: what it did, what the flags meant, when you'd reach for it in real work, and a warning when the same command would be destructive on a production system. It works without AI too; the explanations are just faster with it.

A structured path. 146+ command implementations organized into progressive tracks, from filesystem navigation through text processing, scripting, system administration, and advanced troubleshooting. You can follow the path or ignore it and explore.

Runs on Linux, macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon), and Windows. MIT licensed, free, and the code is public.

Why We Built It

Arc Labs works on education designed for how people actually learn — including learners who don't thrive in traditional formats. A safe environment plus instant, judgment-free explanations removes the two things that stop most people at the terminal: fear of breaking something, and the shame of not knowing what a wall of flags means.

All learning data stays local to your machine. That's not a feature we added; it's how we build everything.

We're actively developing lesson packs (containers and orchestration are next), a community contribution framework for lessons, and broader AI model support. If you want to shape where it goes, the repository is open.
