Arc Academy Terminal

An open-source terminal app for learning the Linux command line by using it, on a simulated system where mistakes cost nothing.

Open source, GPL-2.0. Version 1.0.

Why It Exists

The command line is one of the most durable skills in computing and one of the worst taught. Tutorials send people into a real shell where one mistyped command has real consequences, so most learners never get past copying commands they do not understand.

Arc Academy Terminal lets people practice the real thing and learn from their mistakes without paying for them.

What It Does
01

Ten lessons, from navigation and file management through permissions, processes, pipes, package management, networking and Git.

02

Practice in a simulated shell: Arc Academy acts out every command inside its own practice folder, so nothing runs on the rest of your computer.

03

Commands that would wipe a disk or delete everything are refused with a plain explanation of what they would have done.

04

A live explanation of every command you run, plus an optional assistant that works with the model provider you choose, including local models.

05

Streaks, 30 achievements, and daily and weekly challenges that complete when you run the matching command for real.

06

Custom lesson packs, written as plain TOML files.

How It's Built
  • → Rust, with a ratatui terminal interface
  • → Six crates, published on crates.io
  • → Progress is stored locally

Install
